S-Video

S-Video is the abbreviation for separated video. In other words this basically means two separate feeds are sent instead of one. This isn't like composite video in which the entire set of signals are send on one line. S-Video usually comes in 480i or 576 I resolution video. It doesn't carry audio on the same cable as you would need a separate cable line for that.

S-Video is commonly used in the United States,Canada,Australia, and Japan. The S-Video jacks is found on consumer products such as TV's, DVD players and VCR and many digital products that are used today. Most video game consoles also have the S-Video plug to use too. The S-Video cable was used for computer to television for business and home applications. The real problem with S-Video is that you can use it on high definition products.

In today's word of digital and HD products the s-video has recently seen a decline in it's use. S-Video can carry some of the signal of these HD products thus making s-video virtually useless if you have HD products. Being able to carry one signal was great when s-video first came out, but now it's not something most people want or use today. VCR's use s-video, but they have seen a rapid decline to and I don't expect that to change anytime soon either. Without new products being made that use s-video it doesn't look like it has much a future except for the products that need it like game consoles, but even that is starting to be phase out. At one time s-video was king and everything used s-video on it. That has changed alot recently and I don't ever really seeing that coming back anytime soon.

With HD becoming the range look for s-video slowly to be phased out even more as HD can't used S-video. People want the best possible picture and sound and s-video just doesn't do that anymore. The technology was good for awhile but it has ran it's usefulness and it won't be around in the next 10 years except on the products that currently use it. technology grows so fast that what is hot now maybe gone in a year or two. It's a sad commentary on society but very true. We are introducing new technology so fast that even computers are obsolete in a few years. S-video was just a casualty of technology.
