Dolby Surround

If you heard the new movie in need 1980s and 1990s and you no doubt have heard them say “The following is presented in Dolby Surround Sound,” or you've read that little Dolby surround asterisk at the bottom of the screen before the film is begun. Dolby Surround was the consumer version of the Dolby’s presence in movie theatres; in fact if you have a cassette tape that is of any consequence back from the day and you no doubt but around on the back will see the Dolby surround logo on the back label it as part of the inlay cover. It may say something like “Dolby Pro Logic” if your cassettes were from the later 1980’s, but the intention is the same as the Dolby surround sound technology was used for making cassette tapes sound better.

Dolby surround was originally produced in four channels of audio: left, center, right, and mono surround; these were all placed on two audio tracks which were then divided into stereo soundtrack for the movies and for your cassette tapes.

While the Dolby surround format has basically gone out of use in recent years with the rise of digital audio, Dolby surround sound was a great leap for its time as it tried to take what was and turn it into something even better.

If you are still looking for technology that is based in Dolby surround each of those and you may have to do little to work to find this. Just because so much of what's been made in the last few years is abandoned this technology and it has basically expired; however if you are looking in older used record stores or thrift shops you can probably find a unit that plays in Dolby surround and then on you do is plug little tapes from underneath your bed and pop them in for a sensory experience. Dolby is certainly not what we have today and the difference is more than noticeable; you'd think that they're just making baby steps in last years and that just seems like things to progress are naturally. However the difference is noticeable and the leaps and bounds we have made in this technology these last years have been impressive.

A number of brands are in on this Dolby surround sound from the beginning including Zenith and many others. Zenith DTV virtual surround in Dolby was a very popular technology for both their televisions in their VCRs and the 1980s.
